Become an Observer
If you are already hold an IAM advanced qualification you can become an Observer, providing one-to-one observed rides or drives and playing a key part in helping Associates pass their Advanced test.
Being an Observer is a voluntary role, although motorcycle observers use their own motorcycle so can request that associates contribute towards their motorcycle running costs. The standard contribution for this has been set at £15.00 per session and it is at each observer’s discretion whether to request this contribution.
Being an observer is a very rewarding role, providing time to coach an associate member to progress to taking their own Advanced Driving/Riding Test.
You’ll gain a recognized qualification for life
Becoming an IAM observer will also provide you with recognized skills and an industry qualification – all new Observers will hold an IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) accredited IAM Observer qualification. You will also be re-tested every 5 years to ensure your skills are kept up to standard.
MWAM will support you with honing your coaching skills to obtain this qualification, which is a practical test with a focus on the competency skills to develop the driving/riding skills of others.
Thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable time too
We are looking for that combination of excellent driving and riding skills plus the ability to communicate and encourage associates to develop their own skills in a positive and encouraging way. For this role, it is not much use being a great driver/rider and expect the associate to just copy how you do it! We know Associates are keen to develop their skills and we need our Local Observers to be with them every step of the way providing coaching support with guidance and sensitive encouragement.
Remember how you felt when you passed your advanced test?
Well, now you can help others to experience that elation by helping them to develop advanced skills through your skill and encouragement.
If you are interested we would like to hear from you. The first step is to Contact Us and we will arrange a meeting for you with one of our National Observers (something Local Observers can progress to) for an assessment drive/ride. That of course not only looks at your standard of driving/riding but has an additional focus upon how you may be able to develop those skills necessary to coach others.
